Dry Ice Blasting has been receiving much attention on both social media, youtube and a like. The dry ice is sent at high pressure out of the lance to take of grease, grime, dirt and corrosion. It’s the best system for automotive, antiques, parts and pieces. It’s safe on almost all materials and finishes. This service is only available at our workshop at present but later in the year we will start offering a mobile / at your place service.

Lots of brass polishing work turns up full of dents and scratches. One of the main jobs we do when polishing is sanding and straightening items, so that they look new or almost new when we are finished. This picture of a brass kick plate (they go at the bottom of doors). These take a lot of damage over time. Isn’t it nice to know we can fix them for you.

Polishing door furniture is best done off the door. Maybe when the door is being painted buying a cheap used door pull (to have on the door while yours are being polished to look all lovely again. Not a bad idea! Lacquer over brass is a really bad idea. It’s bad for the environment, cracks, dulls and doesn’t stick properly to the polished surface. The practice of adding lacquer or lacquering polished metal was started by people cutting corners and trying to create a lower maintenance situation for them selves or their customers. This process is crazy because modern lacquer doesn’t last very long. 18 months is the average we tend to see most of the time. The it’s time to strip and lacquer the items all over again.

A better way to manage your polished items

Using protection wax and buffing them lasts a long time and stops items from tarnishing, if that doesn’t appeal to you then look at having them “Ceramic coated”. This very modern idea keeps them looking good for 2 to 3 years and at the end of it strips off pretty easy in comparison to lacquer. Polishing and then re-application of the ceramic coating is then applied.

Costs for polishing your door furniture in and around London, Middlesex, surrey etc?

A standard size letterbox, door knob or door pull, lock covers and door numbers will usually cost between £35 and £50 if done at our workshop. If done on location at your address this goes up to £135 and £150 respectively. We always recommend sending us images of the items you need doing so that we can give you an estimate before moving forward.

These are not the easiest thing to polish, however we got it done. These have to be a flawless mirror finish. Our friends make these so if you would like a custom design made for your space or home lets us know.

It doesn’t matter if it’s plated brass or solid brass. We can clean plated metals but if it’s already worn through then replacement or re-plating might be the best way forward. In many cases we have replaced plated items with solid brass items for less money than it would cost to re-plate the old items! Due to environmental issues with plating metals. The cost has risen to a point now where solid brass, bronze or alloy items are more cost effective for decorative items, plaques and door furniture.
